Lactation Consult Basics

What to Expect

No need to clean-up the house, all you need to prepare is your breastfeeding concerns and questions. A lactation professional is on the way.

Your Initial Consult

During your first consult, we will review your medical history, birth experience, and previous breastfeeding experience and/or education. All you need to prepare is any questions you may have.

Every consult will be tailored to each mom and where they are on their breastfeeding path. Therefore, all of my consults will focus on teaching you skills and techniques to reach your breastfeeding and pumping goals.

Feel free to ask about breast pumps, returning to work, breastfeeding supplies, and supplements for mom and baby. All information provided will be backed by the latest research.

Follow-Up Consults

Repeating consults will review breastfeeding difficulties and recommended interventions. The length may vary depending on the concerns and price will be adjusted as such, if paying out-of-pocket. With each consult, I want to transition from me leading, to me only offering guidance, to you leading a feed.

My goal is for you to leave each consult feeling more informed and confident in your breastfeeding knowledge and decisions.

Weighted Feeds

When directly-breastfeeding, it can be difficult to assume how much milk baby is consuming. Providing a weighted feed at a consult can provide reassurance and evidence of appropriate milk transfer.

A weighted feed is best performed when baby is wearing nothing but a diaper. They will be placed on an infant scale before the feed and their weight will be recorded in grams. At the end of the feed, this process will be repeated, and an approximate measure of milk consumption will be calculated within 5mL.

Weighted feeds are an ideal method of tracking the efficiency of milk transfer, as mom and baby become more experienced with breastfeeding and their concerns are addressed.

F.A.Q.'s

  • Do I need to wear a mask or will you wear a mask during our consult?

    • This is one of the first questions I ask when we set up a time for our first consult. While I am fully vaccinated, I do not mind wearing a mask as a precaution. All in all, I leave the decision to the client.

  • How many consults are covered with TLN?

    • TLN will determine if they have a partnership with your insurance. In the case that they do, up to 6 consults will be covered.

  • What are your best times for a consult?

    • I am able to meet during the day and afternoon on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Saturdays. I am willing to make time on other days if an appointment is urgent.
